An early Sunday afternoon tipoff in the NBA sees an inter-conference matchup as the East’s eighth-place Cleveland Cavaliers host the West’s bottom-placed San Antonio Spurs. Cleveland have been on an upswing, winning seven of their last 10 games to bring their record to 20-15 on the season. Their most recent appearances were a pair of games against the Washington Wizards in which the Cavs would record two convincing wins. They blasted the Wiz by 39 points in the first game to win 140-101 and followed that up with a 114-90 victory just two days later. The Cavaliers have been dealing with injury problems all season but have been coping well without starting point guard Darius Garland and key defensive anchor Evan Mobley. Despite their solid record, fourth to eighth in the Eastern Conference is extremely congested with only a half game separating the five teams involved.

While the Detroit Pistons have garnered the majority of the negative attention this season due to their record-setting losing streak, the Spurs are certainly rivals for the ignominious title of ‘worst team in the league’. At 5-29, San Antonio has the second-worst record in the NBA. However, they currently sit as the lowest-ranked team in terms of adjusted net rating (-9.1) while the Wizards (-8.8) and Pistons (-8.5) rank slightly better. On the bright side, Wembanyama and the Spurs put up an excellent fight against the much stronger Bucks in their last game. Tied at 121 a piece with a minute left on the clock, the Spurs ultimately weren’t able to close out the game and would lose 125-121. The defeat was the fourth in a row for Gregg Popovich’s team and the ninth in their last 10 overall.
