Unseeded Clara Burel and wildcard Elina Svitolina will meet on Friday in the semifinals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg. Burel has dropped only one set in the three matches she has played here. This was the middle set against fourth seed Berarda Pera in the quarterfinals. Burel also defeated another higher seed on her path to the last four with fifth seed Sorana Cristea falling to her racket. This will have her confident of upsetting a former champion here and advancing to her first final of the year. Burel arrived in Strasbourg having dropped 14 places to 122nd in the world. But she has since moved up 18 places in the live ranking to 104th. A win on Friday will catapult her back to the top 100. Burel has won 12 of the 19 matches she has played thus far with five coming on clay. The winner of this match will play either seventh seed Lauren Davis or the unseeded Anna Blinkova in the final.

Elina Svitolina is slowly taking charge of her season and currently has a record of six wins and six losses from 12 matches. All her matches have been on clay. The Ukranian is a former champion here having won the title in 2020. Svitolina returned to the court in April after a year-long break occasioned by the birth of her first child. She debuted at the Charleston Open and has participated in the ITF, and Challenger levels also trying to get back to full fitness. Her absence from the sport precipitated her falling out of the top 500. She arrived in Strasbourg ranked number 508 but she has since moved up a massive 136 places to number 372 in the live ranking. Svitolina has played against Burel before in Chicago in 2021 and won despite Burel retiring in the third set. She has played only two matches in Strasbourg after being granted a walkover in the second round. The former world number three is yet to drop a set and defeated sixth seed Varvara Gracheva to book this round.
