Top seeded Tseng Chun-hsin begins his bid to win the Zadar Open Challenger Tour event. The world number 125 begins this outdoor clay court event with a first round match against Mate Valkusz, currently ranked 244th. This will be the first meeting between the two players. Tseng is making his debut in Zadar and he arrives here after being eliminated from the Challenger in Pune in the quarterfinals. It was the second successive tournament that he made it to the last eight after not being able to progress past the second round or even the qualifiers at his first five tournaments to start the year. He qualified for the main draw at the Australian Open for the second successive year but was again eliminated in the first round.

Mate Valkusz is struggling with a lack of consistency and arrives here having lost four of his last five matches. The Hungarian number four was forced to retire in the third set of his second-round match against eventual finalist Nino Serdarusic in the Szekesfehervar Challenger earlier in the month and will hope to be fully fit for this match. Valkusz’s highlight of the season so far is reaching the semifinals of the Challenger in Tenerife which is also the only tournament he has won multiple matches this year.
