Cristian Garin has a good chance of knocking out a seed in the first round at Roland Garros. He takes on the 30th seed Tommy Paul who has been rather inconsistent of late. Last weeks saw Paul lose to Tallon Grieksppoor in the first round of the Geneva Open. Of his previous four matches on clay before that defeat, the American had only won one match. His best form this year was shown in the first couple of months with quarter final appearances in Adelaide and Acapulco and a semi-final at the Delray Beach Open. Since then, he's played seven tournaments with only a last 16 reached on clay in Houston. Paul is world ranked 33 but has never got past the second round at Roland Garros.and his best ever in a Grand Slam is the third round at the 2020 Australian Open.

His Chilean opponent is ranked just three places below him but was the 22nd seed here last year. He got to the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2021, losing to Daniil Medvedev. That remains his best ever performance in a Grand Slam event. He has shown good form on clay in recent weeks and that includes a semi-final in Houston and the last eight at the Rome Masters. His last two losses have both been to top ten ranked players, namely Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev,. There have been two previous matches against his opponent. One was on the Challenger Tour and won by Garin, the other in Cincinatti on the ATP Tour last year with Paul winning. This is their first meeting on clay and the tip is for Garin to get the win.
