World number three Daniil Medvedev will on Saturday begin his Shanghai Masters campaign against unseeded Cristian Garin. The winner of this second-round match will play either Sebastian Korda or Bu Yunchaokete next. Cristian Garin defeated the qualifier Alexander Kovacevic in straight sets in the first round. It wasn’t a straightforward 2-0 victory though as the second set required a tiebreaker. The Chilean has had a topsy-turvy last couple of months. He has lost five of his last 10 matches with four of those defeats coming on hard court. Garin has compiled a 36-22 record and has won 17 of 26 matches on hard courts. He won against Medvedev on clay in Madrid two seasons ago and will hope for a similar outcome here. Garin is up six places to 92nd in the live ranking.

Daniil Medvedev has defeated Garin twice in their three previous meetings. He won on hard court in Montreal the first time they met four years ago. The Russian will therefore be confident of making a winning start to his quest for another Shanghai title. Medvedev triumphed here the last time he took part in the competition which was back in 2019. The world number three has been one of the best performers in the tour this season. He has compiled a 59-13 record with 37 of her victories coming on hard courts. Medvedev has won five titles with three coming on hard courts. He arrives here after finishing as runner-up in Beijing.
