Reigning Currie Cup champions Cheetahs have a point to prove when they host Sharks in Sunday’s Challenge Cup clash. Sharks are currently lodged at the summit of Group 1 with five points while Cheetahs are third with a point less. Cheetahs earned a Challenge Cup ticket as Currie Cup winners and kicked off with a 15-33 win over Zebre. They have been peerless in their domestic competition, winning the last four in a row. Cheetahs will want to show that they can match the big boys after failing to make the United Rugby Championship cut. The decision was controversial owing to the fact that they were part of the Pro 14.
Sharks got their Challenge Cup underway with a resounding 45-5 victory over Section Paloise, collecting a bonus point in the process. With the win, last season’s quarter finalists will be looking for their maiden back-to-back victory this season. Such has been their inconsistent campaign in the season. This run sees them sit second from bottom in the URC with a single win. With South African internationals now back at Sharks, the team is expected to start picking up wins.
