The standalone Currie Cup fixture on Saturday will see the Free State Cheetahs taking on the Griffons in Bloemfontein. The hosts are the defending champions, while the visitors finished bottom of the table last season.
Free State Cheetahs brought an end to a three-year wait to lift the Currie Cup title last season and will begin their quest to win back-to-back titles for the first time in their history this weekend.
Last term, not only were the Cheetahs the winners of the competition, but they also dominated the group stage finishing with 51 points in their 14 games. During that time they recorded nine wins, one draw and four losses.
Notably, the Cheetahs earned 13 bonus points last season - the most of any team in the division!
Meanwhile, in almost complete contrast, the Griffons had a terrible 2023 Currie Cup campaign, finishing bottom of the group with just 10 points in 14 games.
Throughout the competition, they managed just one win which came against the Bulls, while losing their remaining 13 games. The bulk of their points last season came by way of bonus points (6).
