Week five of the 2024 Currie Cup season kicks off with the Free State Cheetahs taking on the Blue Bulls on Friday evening. The hosts are currently in second place in Pool A while the visitors lead the Pool standings. Let’s get into this top-of-the-table match prediction.
The Free State Cheetahs have made a solid start to their title defence, currently second on the log with 15 points after the first four rounds of play. They’ve picked up three wins and suffered one loss to date, though they have earned three bonus points.
The men from the Free State bounced back to winning ways last week, beating their neighbours the Griffons 47-45 in a nail-biter in Welkom. That was a welcomed result for the champs given the behind-the-scenes issues and confrontations the franchise has faced in recent weeks.
Now the Cheetahs will look to build up some momentum against the Bulls, who beat them comprehensively in week three at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The Bulls have been the pick of the teams in this year’s Currie Cup, currently the only team in the competition to still have a 100% winning record, having rattled off four wins in a row, picking up two bonus points along the way.
Last week, the side from the Highveld travelled to the Cape and overcame Western Province with a convincing 50-34 victory, coming back from 27-10 down at halftime. They were spearheaded by Jaco van der Walt, who notched up 25 points.
