The round of 64 in the ATP Shanghai Masters sees eighth-seeded Casper Ruud taking on Yoshihito Nishioka. The winner of this matchup will advance to a round of 32 meeting with either Yannick Hanfmann or 29th-seed Christopher Eubanks. The talented young Dane Casper Ruud received a bye in the first round so will open up his pursuit of the Shanghai Masters title here. Ruud is having a decent year with a record of 33 wins and 19 defeats. His last appearance saw him bow out of the Beijing Open in the quarter-final to Carlos Alcaraz. Ruud was crowned champion of the Estoril Open in Portugal back in April, his only competition win of the year so far. The 24-year-old also went on a fantastic run to the final of the French Open but was ultimately unable to overcome the great Novak Djokovic. Ruud’s best results this season have come on clay courts where he is 22-9. The ATP ninth-ranked pro is undoubtedly a clay specialist, boasting a 69% winning percentage on the surface throughout his career.

Yoshihito comes into this match looking to continue his strong form on the China circuit. The 28-year-old finished as the runner-up in the ATP Zhuhai event in late September, winning four straight before losing to Khachanov in the final. He followed that up by winning his first round matchup before losing in straight sets to Jannik Sinner in the Beijing Open. Nishioka’s last outing was a 2-1 win over 47th-ranked Daniel Altmaier, setting up this second-round matchup. It’s been an up-and-down year for the 48th-ranked Japanese pro who holds a record of 20 wins and 19 defeats in 2023. Nishioka underwent two really rough stretches this year which saw him win a combined three matches in 18 appearances. However, he looks to have rebounded strongly and comes into this second-round in good form.
