Sixth seed Casper Ruud takes on the unseeded Jaume Munar in the opening round of the 2025 Australian Open. The winner will then play Nikoloz Basilashvili or Jakub Mensik for a place in the third round. Below is our prediction for this match.

Casper Ruud has never had a deep run in Melbourne as in the US and French Opens and will hope this is his year. The Norwegian started his campaign at the United Cup and won both of his fixtures.

He will be confident of maintaining this 100% start given his dominant record against Munar. Ruud, the world number six, has won three of the four times he has matched up with Munar.

Jaume Munar is having a positive start to the season and will hope to secure a prolonged stay in Melbourne. The Spaniard began his campaign in Hong Kong where he battled to reach the semi-finals.

Munar is making his seventh appearance in this major. In his previous six appearances, however, he won only two first-round ties and has also never progressed past the second round.

Though he has struggled against Ruud, Munar did secure victory in their sole matchup on a hardcourt. That was in their most recent encounter three years ago in Tokyo.

The 27-year-old is currently placed 62nd in the live ranking.
