Third seed Casper Ruud starts his Japan Open campaign with a first-round showdown against unseeded Jordan Thompson. The two will clash on Thursday in their sixth career meeting. Read on for the stats leading up to this match and our prediction.

Ruud has defeated Thompson three times before. He won their most recent meeting in straight sets in Barcelona back in April. Looking to banish recent struggles, he will hope for another dominant display.

The world number nine has had a fruitful 2024 campaign, so far claiming two titles. He won in Barcelona and Geneva and made runner-up finishes in Monte-Carlo, Acapulco and Los Cabos.

The Norwegian is now just two wins away from hitting the 50-win mark for a third time in four seasons.

Jordan Thompson has also defeated Ruud three times and has claimed one win against him this year. The Australian’s victory in this fixture this season also happens to be the most important win of his career.

Thompson beat Ruud in straight sets in the final in Los Cabos and by doing so, won his first career tour title. He will be confident of another hard-court win over Ruud as he is having a superb run on the surface.

The 30-year-old has claimed 31 wins this season and 22 were on hard courts. After his win in Los Cabos, Thompson would again make another title challenge in Atlanta where he would finish second.

Currently placed 28th in the live ranking, which is a new career high, Thompson lost his last two fixtures. The winner here will go on to face either Marin Cilic or Kei Nishikori next.
