Casper Ruud is set to meet Cristian Garin on Thursday at the Hamburg European Open. This is a second-round tie from which the winner will advance to the quarterfinals to play Dusan Lajovic or Arthur Fils. Top seed Ruud needed all three sets to overcome the challenge of Sebastian Baez in the first round. Though he wasn’t at his best as he managed only one game in the second set, Ruud has dominated on clay this season. Twenty-one of his 27 victories have come on the surface and so too have his three finals and one title. He will hope this form allows him to add to his one win against Garin and halt this almost one-sided affair. Ruud has lost three times against Garin. The world number four is a former semifinalist in Hamburg.

Cristian Garin is also a former semifinalist in Hamburg. He defeated Ruud earlier this season at Indian Wells and has twice won this fixture on clay. The Chilean has also had his best moments this season on clay. Seventeen of his 29 victories have come on the surface though, unlike Ruud, he is yet to advance to a final. In his last match, he battled from a set down to defeat Hugo Dellien in just over two hours. This was the second successive time he had been forced into a comeback victory in the tournament. Garin is in fine form at the moment and has won seven of his last 10 fixtures, all coming on clay. This form has seen him get back into the ATP top 100 at number 99 in the live ranking.
