Caroline Wozniacki is back at Indian Wells and will battle unseeded Zhu Lin in the first round. Wozniacki hasn’t played in this event since 2019. Which is the year she announced that she would retire in 2020. She did hold true to her word but made a U-turn last year and is now fully back as a competitive athlete. The Dane has had a slow start unlike her return last season and has managed just one win in four outings. Her sole win came in the first round in Melbourne but this was aided by the retirement of her opponent. Wozniacki won the only other time she was paired up against Lin. This was nine years ago in Kuala Lumpur. The former world number one is a former champion (2011) and two-time finalist at Indian Wells. She is currently ranked 204th in the WTA and is coming off a first-round exit in San Diego.

Zhu Lin is making her debut in this WTA 1000 event. Having had a better start to the year than Wozniacki, she will be confident of making a winning start. The 30-year-old has compiled an 8-7 record and has managed all her wins on hard courts. She began the season amazingly and made the final in Hobart as well as the last eight in Brisbane. However, she has tailed off in recent outings and has lost her last three matches. She lost in the first round in San Diego in her last outing. Lin is currently ranked 61st in the WTA. The winner here will then play 25th seed Donna Vekic in the second round.
