Fifth seed Elise Mertens will be seeking her first win at the Birmingham Classic when she takes on the wildcard Caroline Wozniacki. They will battle in the first round with the winner progressing to play Karolina Pliskova or a yet-to-be-revealed qualifier next. Caroline Wozniacki hasn’t played on grass since a third-round exit at Wimbledon in 2019. Injuries and health concerns saw the former world number-one call time on her career in 2020. She would make a U-turn and return to the tour in 2023 where she played just seven hard-court fixtures. This season she has made 15 appearances winning seven times. A majority of her victories came at Indian Wells where she made a strong run to the quarter-finals. Wozniacki, who starts the week up to 114th in the live ranking, has defeated Mertens both times they have met. Their last showdown was in 2018.

Elise Mertens has never won a match in her three appearances in Birmingham, losing in the first round each time. She last played here in 2022 and will be eager in her return to not suffer the same fate. The Belgian has lost her last two matches. She was defeated in the first round at Hertogenbosch last time out in her season debut on grass. Despite this, she starts the week up one place to 31st in the live ranking. The 28-year-old has had a topsy-turvy campaign and has won just two more matches than the 14 she has lost. Mertens isn’t a strong performer on grass and hasn’t finished with a winning record on the surface since 2019.
