Third-seed Caroline Garcia will take on Petra Kvitova, who is seeded seventh, in the quarter-final of the 2023 Berlin Open on Friday. This will be the 10th meeting between the pair, with Kvitova currently leading the head-to-head standings 5-4; however, they have never faced off on the grass. Currently ranked fifth in the world, Garcia will be making her first quarter-final appearance since April. Her clay court form was fairly poor by her own standards, but now back on one of her favoured surfaces, she has already looked much more comfortable. Garcia beat wildcard Sabine Lisicki in the opening round and qualifier Jaimee Fourlis in the round of 16 without dropping a set. Garcia is now 21-12 for the year though she is yet to earn a title, coming in as the runner-up twice so far. Last season, it was her grasscourt form that revived her season and propelled her into the top ten. Can she mark her first grasscourt tournament of this year with a semi-final berth?

Meanwhile, Kvitova has also made a solid start on the grass, breezing past Nadia Podoroska 6-1 6-1 in the last round and beating Karolina Pliksova in her tournament opener. The Czech tried her hand on the clay and had no joy, exiting in the first round of the two tournaments she participated in. Her record now reads as 19-7 for the year, which includes a title run in Miami back in March. With two Wimbledon titles under her belt, it’s fair to say that she relishes the grass, and on her day, there aren’t many that can overcome her. However, with not much match time over the last two months, she will need to dig deep to get the better of Garcia.
