World number 97 Bernarda Pera and 23rd seed Caroline Garcia will meet in the second round of the WTA Wimbledon Championships. This match will mark the third career meeting between these two. The winner will play Jelena Ostapenko or Daria Snigur in the third round.

Garcia is playing in the main draw at Wimbledon for the 11th successive season. She has twice qualified for the fourth round with the most recent such accomplishment being two seasons ago. As a strong grass court player, she will be hopeful of setting a new record at SW19. Garcia began her grass campaign in the first round after taking a month away from competitive action.

The rest worked wonders as she began the tournament with a 2-0 success over Anna Blinkova. Blinkova had won two straight matches against Garcia before that first-round battle. A former world number four, Garcia has now won 16 times this year. This latest victory has moved her up two places in the live ranking to 22nd.

Bernarda Pera has won both times she has been paired up with Garcia. Their last showdown came four years ago however, and none of their battles has been on grass. The American will hope to maintain her unblemished record in this fixture and will be boosted by her first-ever win at Wimbledon.

Pera, who is in her sixth appearance at the All England Club, had never won a main draw match before this season. It took a big effort from her to win her first-round tie against Anastasia Potapova. The match lasted for two hours and 50 minutes and saw Pera come from a set down to win.

She has now won five of seven matches on grass, her best return on the surface. Pera, who arrived at SW19 after a runner-up finish at the Gaiba Challenger, has moved to 84th in the live ranking.
