Seventh seeded Alison Van Uytvanck has unseeded opposition in the Lyon Open quarter final. The Belgian faces Caroline Garcia with the winner up against either Vitalia Diatchenko or the eighth seeded Zhang Shuai. Van Uytvanck is ranked 55th in the world, three places higher than at the start of this year. The Belgian is having her best week of 2022, having previously failed to get past the last 32 of any other tournament. This week has seen her win both of her matches in Lyon without dropping a set. The first round saw her defeat Vera Zvonereva for the loss of just three games. That was followed up by a straight sets win over Varvara Gracheva.

Caroline Garcia will be her toughest test so far this week. The world number 74 beat the top seeded Camila Giorgi in the first round and then defeated Martina Trevisan in the second round. Both matches saw the French players lose a set. Four years ago, Garcia was ranked fourth in the world but has struggled in recent years. 2022 began well with a run to the last eight in Sydney. Only one match was won but she did get a win over Jessica Pegula. Her next three matches after that were lost, but then she beat Simona Halep in Doha last week, before losing to Cori Gauff. The two players have met a couple of times before with the score at 1-1. Garcia won a Fed Cup match three years ago but lost to Van Uytvanck in this tournament at this stage in 2020, winning just four games. Van Uytvanck likes playing in Lyon and lost in the semi-final two years ago. Back her to beat Garcia but it may take three sets to do so.
