An East vs West matchup in the NHL on Thursday sees the Metropolitan division’s fifth-place Carolina Hurricanes hosting the Pacific division’s fifth-place Seattle Kraken. After a two game winning streak to start the 2023/24 season, Carolina have hit a snag. The Canes are in desperate need of a win after losing their last three on the bounce ahead of this matchup. Their most recent outing on Tuesday saw them shutout on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 3-0 loss. However, the team returns home now after a lengthy six game road trip and will be optimistic of marking their return to the PNC Arena with a victory. They’ll have first string goalie Frederik Andersen back between the pipes after third-string Pyotr Kochetkov played the last three. Carolina won their first two games of the season with Andersen as the starting goalie before taking a puck to the head, ruling him out for a few games.
The Kraken have experienced a slow start to the new season after making the playoffs last year with a 46-28-8 record. They suffered a four game losing streak to start the year, the first three of which came on the road before losing to the Avalanche at home. They responded with a 7-4 win against Carolina one week ago and will be hoping to replicate that performance today. The Kraken’s most recent outing saw them give up a late equalizer at the end of the third period to the Red Wings before securing the overtime win in a 5-4 win on Tuesday. Seattle’s major problem so far this season has been the lack of consistent offensive production. The visitors started the season with a stretch of only two goals in their first four games.
