These teams met in New York early in November in a game that has set the teams on different trajectories since. The Islanders ran out into a 3-0 lead before falling in overtime 4-3. Since that game, the Canes have won 6 of their next 9, while the Isles have lost 8 of 11.
The frailties of the Islanders came out once more in their most recent game. They held a 4-2 lead after two periods against the New Jersey Devils but ended up losing the game 5-4. Coach Lane Lambert is under pressure to get the team to start defending leads.
Last season, if the Isles went into the 3rd period with a multi goal lead, they didn't lose a single game. So far this season, they have given away that lead 7 times in just 21 games. They have to find a way to halt that before their chance of qualifying for the playoffs slips away. It is only a quarter of the way through the season but they cannot afford to keep giving up leads in this way.
In contrast to last season, the Hurricanes have not been close to the same level of defensive force but they have found a way to pull games out of the fire. That was the case two games back where they found themselves 2-0 behind late against the Columbus Blue Jackets but found a way to win the game.
This game has been one that the Canes have dominated in recent years in the league, winning 9 of the last 10 that have been played in this barn. Carolina sit 3rd in the NHL with an average of 33.7 shots per game while the Islanders are second worst allowing an average of 35 shots against. For a team like the Islanders who don't score much, this is a bad looking matchup for whoever starts between the pipes. The Canes home form this season has been excellent and that can continue against the Isles.
