The 23-16-5 Detroit Red Wings will wrap up their three-game road trip with a visit to the 24-14-5 Carolina Hurricanes early on Saturday. The Canes have been blowing hot and cold of late. In three of their last six games they have scored six times, in their other three they have six goals combined. They lost 2-5 to the Kings who were the last team in this building, having needed overtime to see off the Pittsburgh Penguins the time before, a game in which they lost a 2-0 lead. The Kings had lost eight games straight before their win in Carolina so that has to go down as a very disappointing effort from the Canes. A win in Madison Square Garden in their opening game of 2024 against the New York Rangers was arguably their best performance of the season and that Kings loss is one of their absolute worst. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour must be wondering what he has to do to get some consistency out of a team that has won their division in three straight years.
Six wins from their last seven games have the Red Wings flying (pun intended) at present, their only defeat coming in overtime against the Edmonton Oilers who have won 11 games straight at the time of writing. The first two games of this road trip were at the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers, knocking off both of those teams to make it five in a road away from Little Caesars Arena. 12 wins on the road is more than the 11 they have put up at home as they push for a playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. Their captain Dylan Larkin is enjoying a good spell with points in six straight and eight of his last nine games. He has 11 points in his last 11 games against the Hurricanes as well so will be confident of extending that point streak. 22-year-old Moritz Seider leads the team in ice time with more than 22 minutes a game. He has proven himself to be a top young D-man in the league and one of the players that this franchise can continue to build around.
