Top seed Carlos Alcaraz makes his tour return with a Friday match against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann at the China Open. In this first-round tie, Alcaraz will be resuming action after a three-week break. He will be on a recovery mission after his US Open disappointment. The Spaniard was eliminated at the semifinals stage at Flushing Meadows, rendering him unable to defend the title. He also lost his world number one crown and is currently ranked second in the ATP. He won both his matches and defeated Miomir Kecmanovic by the loss of five games to advance to the main draw. The win was the 40th of a strong season for the German. Hanfmann has won against top 10 players before in his career and will be confident of his chances here. He has recorded seven victories against top-10 opposition with the latest win coming earlier this season against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Hanfmann, currently ranked 51st in the live ranking, has lost six of 11 matches on hard courts this season. The winner of this match will battle either Karen Khachanov or Lorenzo Musetti next.
