Top seed Carlos Alcaraz will be up against qualifier Max Purcell on Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. Alcaraz recorded his best result in Cincinnati last season as he made it to the last eight. He will hope to go further and probably win his fifth Masters 1000 title. The Spaniard has already won two Masters in a dominant 2023 campaign that has seen him win six titles in total. This has strengthened his hold on the ATP world number one spot. He could however drop to second if he does not at least reach the final. Alcaraz has looked shaky so far in Ohio as he has lost a set in both of his matches. In the last round, he battled for over three hours with 14th seed Tommy Paul. He won in three sets with the first two being decided by tiebreakers. Alcaraz has won 51 of the 55 matches he has played thus far with 14 of those coming on hard court.

Max Purcell is also having a dominant campaign and has compiled a 47-17 record. He has been at his best on hard court where the majority of his victories have come. The Australian has won 41 matches on hard court. This has seen him play five of his total six challenger finals on the surface, winning three titles. He will hope to keep this form and continue prolonging his debut in Cincinnati. Purcell started things off here in the qualifiers and has won four matches. He defeated fifth seed Casper Ruud in three sets in the second round before outdueling Stan Wawrinka in straights in his last match. This giant-slaying run will have him confident of success against Alcaraz. Purcell is up a massive 23 places in the live ranking to 47th which is a new career high for him. The winner of this first encounter between the two will play either unseeded Hubert Hurkacz or lucky loser Alexei Popyrin in the semifinals.
