Top seed Carlos Alcaraz takes on unseeded Matteo Arnaldi in the US Open last 16. For the winner there's a quarter final against either sixth seed Jannik Sinner or 12th seeded Alexander Zverev. Alcaraz already knows he'll be losing his top ranking at the end of this tournament. Now he has to do his best to make sure that he doesn't lose the US Open title either. The Spaniard has won six titles this year but only one has been on a hard court. That was at Indian Wells and he'll be hoping for another American win next Sunday. His form coming into this final Grand Slam of the year has been a little bit worrying. He did admit to feeling sluggish when losing to Tommy Paul in Toronto. That was followed by a loss in the Cincinnati final to Novak Djokovic. It's gone better in New York with only one set dropped so far.

Matteo Arnaldi was ranked a career high 61st at the start of this US Open. His run to the last 16 has seen him rise 14 places to 47th. It's by far his best performance in a Grand Slam beating the second round he reached at Roland Garros earlier this year. At Flushing Meadows, he'd never even previously qualified for the main draw. The 22-year-old Italian has been getting his best results on clay. He did win a Challenger Tour hard court event but before this week on hard court he'd not beaten a top 100 ranked player in 2023. He's had the best week of his career in New York though with a five set win over Arthur Fils and then knocking out inconsistent 16th seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets. His run ends here though and we tip over 26.5 games to be played.
