Top seed Carlos Alcaraz and the unseeded Lorenzo Musetti will on Sunday square off at the China Open. The two will battle in the second round with the winner next playing either seventh seed Casper Ruud or unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Carlos Alcaraz defeated the qualifier Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets in the first round. The match represented his return to the tour after a three-week break following his US Open semifinal elimination. Alcaraz, ranked second in the ATP, has been dominant this season and has won 59 of the 66 matches he has played. Twenty-two of his victories have come on hard courts where he has also earned one of his six titles. Alcaraz defeated Musetti back in June at the French Open to take a 2-1 lead in this series.

Lorenzo Musetti battled for almost two hours before getting the better of Karen Khachanov in three sets in the first round. The win was the 32nd of a topsy-turvy season for the Italian who has lost 23 times. Currently ranked 18th in the world, Musetti has also struggled on hard courts and has compiled a 10-8 record on the surface. Musetti is making his debut in Beijing and arrived here after his semifinal finish in Chengdu. He will hope for at least a similar run here. This will be the first match between Alcaraz and Musetti to be played on any other surface aside from clay. Musetti defeated Alcaraz last season in Hamburg to lift the first tour title of his career.
