Unseeded Gregoire Barrere will seek an upset when he takes on top seed Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai on Saturday. The winner of this second-round tie will then proceed to play either Daniel Evans or Mikhail Kukushkin. World number two Carlos Alcaraz had a disappointing end to his debut in Beijing. He was eliminated in the semifinals by eventual winner Jannik Sinner. It was the second straight tournament that he had failed to make the final. He will seek to respond and triumph in what also is his debut in Shanghai. Alcaraz has for the first time in his career won 60 matches. He has impressively won 61 of the 69 matches he has played this season. His previous best was 57 wins during his breakout season last year. Twenty-four of his victories have come on hard courts where he has lost just five times.

Gregoire Barrere isn’t having a season anywhere close to the one Alcaraz is having but he has had success. The Frenchman has compiled a 32-27 record and has won one indoor hardcourt challenger title. He is also making his debut in Shanghai and began things off with a straight-sets victory. Barrere impressively lost just four games in the first round against the unseeded Nuno Borges. The win ended a two-game losing run and moved him up three places to 70th in the live ranking. Barrere has found the going tough on hard courts and has lost more than he has won on the surface. He has lost 11 of 19 matches on hard courts.
