Alcaraz is the third seed in this Masters event being held in Shanghai. The winner of this match will have a quarter-final against either 11th seed Tommy Paul or 30th-seeded Tomas Machac.

The Spaniard has been on a winning streak since a disappointing second round exit in the US Open. He's won 11 matches in a row and that has seen him win the recent China Open. That moved him back up to second in the rankings.

His good form has continued in this tournament with two straight sets victories. Wins have come against Juncheng Shang and Yibing Wu. He had to play a tie-break in the opening set of the match against Wu.

Gael Monfils trails Alcaraz 2-1 in previous meetings but was the winner in their last match. That was in this year's Cincinnati Masters with the Frenchman winning in three sets after losing the first. That avenged a win for Alcaraz in this year's Miami Masters.

The 38-year-old made his Grand Slam debut when his opponent was just one year old. There's no talk of him retiring and he's up to 40th in the live rankings after reaching the third round of this tournament.

Wins have come against Damir Dzumhur, 22nd seed Sebastian Baez and then the 16th-seeded Ugo Humbert. The latter two of those victories both took three sets to achieve with the middle set being lost.
