Top seed Carlos Alcaraz will battle 26th seeded Daniel Evans on Saturday in the next hurdle toward his US Open title defence. The two will meet in the third round with the winner next playing either 16th seed Cameron Norrie or unseeded Matteo Arnaldi. Carlos Alcaraz is yet to drop a set in the tournament after two rounds of play. He defeated Lloyd Harris by the loss of 10 games in the last round. The third set however required a tiebreak in which he won 7-4. Alcaraz has already lost his world number-one title to Novak Djokovic. He should now be even more motivated to emerge victorious again here. The Spaniard won his maiden Grand Slam title here last season. He has grown in leaps and bounds since then and has added another major as well as two more Masters 1000 titles. The now world number two has been the in-form player in the ATP and leads the ATP live race. He has compiled a 55-6 record in 2023 and has won 18 of 21 matches on hard court. The 20-year-old has defeated Evans in both their previous encounters though none has been on hard court.

Daniel Evans has struggled with his form all through 2023. He has lost more matches, 21, than the 16 he has won. Recently though he has seen an upturn in form and arrives for this match having won seven of his last nine fixtures. His latest victory saw him come from behind to defeat Botic van de Zabdschulp in four sets. That second-round duel lasted for two hours and 41 minutes and represented his 10th win on hard court. He is now up two places to 26th in the live ranking. Evans has made it to this round for the third time in a row. He will now seek to equal his best-ever result achieved in 2021 by winning this match. Evans won the Washington Open last month to end a two-year wait for a tour title.
