Canada won their group with three wins out of three and rarely looked like losing; They beat Greece by 29 points and South Korea by 19 before taking on third ranked France and beating them by 11 points. They have won four games in a row since a disappointing Commonwealth Games campaign at the start of the year. They have met Spain twice in the past two years and lost to their rivals on both occasions with the most recent meeting being last year when they lost by 22 points.

Spain are the second seeds but had to go through the first knock-out round to reach the quarter finals. They won their first two games against Japan and Puerto Rico but then suffered a shock defeat to debutants Belgium so only finished second in the group. That took them into a knock-out game against Senegal which was close for the first couple of quarters but the Spanish team eventually won by 15 points. The Spaniards have just that loss to Belgium in their last 14 games. This is the tightest of the quarter finals and the hosts Spain can get a narrow win.
