Sixth seed Camila Giorgi and unseeded Tatjana Maria will meet in the first round at the Poland Open on Monday. Giorgi is making her debut in Warsaw. She hasn’t played a tennis match since losing in the first round at Wimbledon three weeks ago. The Italian has struggled in 2023 and has so far compiled a record of 17 wins and 14 losses. Nine of her victories have come on hard court and so too have five of her defeats. Despite her struggles, Giorgi has won one title so far. She claimed her fourth tour title when she won the inaugural Merida Open in February. This was on hard court and it ended a two-year wait for a title. She defeated Maria on clay the first time they met in 2015. Giorgi starts the week ranked 50th in the WTA.

Tatjana Maria is up two places to 65th in the live ranking. The German has also struggled throughout the year and has won 29 matches while suffering defeat 22 times. She has secured the joint most of her victories, 11, on hard courts. Maria has also lost more matches, nine, on hard courts than on any other surface. She arrives to make her second appearance here after being eliminated in the second round in Budapest. Maria last played in Warsaw 17 years ago in the infancy stages of her career and was eliminated in qualifying. She defeated Giorgi in the only other encounter between them on hard court and will hope for the same outcome four years later. The winner will play either Clara Tauson or Daria Snigur, both unseeded, in the second round
