Jessica Pegula was ranked 81st in the world this time last year. Now the American is up to 26th in the live rankings and 13th in terms of ranking points this year. Pegula takes on Camila Giorgi for a place in the final against either top seed Aryna Sabalenka or fourth seeded Karolina Pliskova. The American might fancy a final against Pliskova as she's beaten her four times this year. Pegula has had a tough time making it to this semi-final. All four of her matches against Anett Kontaveit, tenth seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Danielle Collins and 11th seed Ons Jabeur have gone to three sets. Pegula had to come from behind to get her wins over in all bar the win over Collins. She's won three of her four previous matches against Giorgi. The most recent win was two years ago when they met in the final of a tournament in Washington with only four games lost. That was their first match in seven years.

Camila Giorgi is the world number 71 but was as high as 26th three years ago. Her run to this semi-final in Montreal has seen her climb to 51st in the live rankings and can rise another seven places with a win over Pegula. Giorgi is continuing the good form that saw her reach the last eight at the Tokyo Olympics, where she beat Karolina Pliskova who she may face in the final of this tournament. The Italian also has a recent win over Sabalenka, beating her on the way to a semi-final in Eastbourne. Before June she'd only made it to the last eight in one tournament. This week has seen Giorgi beat ninth seed Elise Mertens, Nadia Podoroska, seventh seeded Petra Kvitova and in the last eight, 11th seeded Coco Gauff and she is yet to drop a set.  This looks like being a close match, the tip is for over 21.5 games.
