Eleventh seeded Jennifer Brady takes on Camila Giorgi in the first round of the women's singles at the Olympics. The winner of this match has a potentially difficult second round match against either Jolena Ostapenko or Elena Vesnina. Brady is the world 15, so with a seeding of 11th, you can see not too many top players have withdrawn from this tournament. This time last year, the American was down at 48th in the rankings. When the WTA Tour resumed, Brady was in top form winning the Top Seed Open and the semi-finals at the US Open and in Ostrava. 2021 saw her go one better, being the runner-up in the Australian Open.  This is her first event since losing to Coco Gauff in the third round at Roland Garros. The first set was lost and then Brady retired.

Camila Giorgi is ranked 58th but was as high as 26th three years ago. This year began with her down at 75th and the Italian has won 14 of her 25 matches. Giorgi didnt't get to the last eight of a tournament this year until Lyon in March. That wasn't built on and there were plenty of early exits until getting to the semi-final of the Eastbourne grass court tournament. Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Pliskova were beaten before losing to Anett Kontaveit, retiring in the first set when 5-4 down. The Italian lost in the second round at Wimbledon and the same stage in Lausanne a fortnight ago. Back Brady to get the win here.
