Ninth seeded Cameron Norrie takes on the seventh seed Carlos Alcaraz in the Madrid Masters last 16. The winner of this match takes on either Rafa Nadal or David Goffin in the quarter finals. Alcaraz has already lost to Nadal once this year so would fancy another match against Nadal especially in their native Spain. The teenager plays this match on his 19th birthday and will hope the result of this match doesn't ruin his celebrations. He's moved up to ninth in the world rankings and that's 111 places higher than he was ranked at this time last year. 2022 has seen him win the clay court tournament held in Rio de Janiero (beating Diego Schwartzmann in the final), lose to Nadal in the Indian Wells semi-final and then win two more titles in Miami and the Barcelona Open on clay. Beating Norrie will take him up to seventh in the live rankings and only Nadal has earned more ranking points than him this year. He beat Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets in his second round match here.

Cameron Norrie has already lost to Alcaraz this year. They met in the Indian Wells quarter final, with Alcaraz winning in straight sets. Norrie is world ranked 11th but was 10th earlier in the year. He reached two clay court finals last year, losing them both. His best performance at Roland Garros is reaching the third round last year. This is his first time playing in Madrid. He's had to play two matches to reach the last 16. The first round saw him defeat qualifier Kwon Soon-woo in straight sets, both ending 7-5. It was tough in round two as Norrie beat John Isner in three sets, losing the second on a tie-break. Norrie made a poor start to this year but has picked up well with a title win in the Delray Beach Open. Clay isn't his best surface but he did get to the last eight in Barcelona last week. This is tough though and the tip is for an Alcaraz win.
