Fifth seed Cameron Norrie is up against unseeded Adrian Mannarino in the Mexican Open first round. Norrie comes into this tournament fresh from his win in Rio on Sunday. That was his first title and third final of the year. His good form has him still 12th in the world but only Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitispas are ahead of him in the live ATP Race. Norrie's recent two finals have both been on clay. Now he returns to a hard court and to Acapulco where he has a good record. In his past four times in this tournament he's reached at least the quarter finals three times. Last year he lost in the final to Rafael Nadal. What happened on the other time in Acapulco? Well, in 2020 he lost in his first match and it was Adrian Mannarino who beat him. Norrie has played 21 matches on the ATP Tour this year and won 18 of them. He has a tough draw in this tournament though with Matteo Berrettini or Alex Molcan the possible second round opponents.

Adrian Mannarino is the world number 64, that's 22 places lower than when he beat Norrie here three years ago. The French player has reached two quarter finals this year. Both were achieved in the US in Dallas and Delray Beach. The highest ranked player beaten in those two tournaments was J.J. Wolf who was in 39th place when being beaten by Mannarino. Last week saw him playing on the Challenger Tour and it didn't go well for him in Monterrey. He lost in his first match to Aleksandar Kovacevic, who was ranked 124th in the world at the time. His win over Norrie in 2020 is the only one he's had over the British player. Norrie has won their other three meetings in straight sets. The most recent being in Delray Beach last year.
