Sunday night in the National Hockey League sees two teams chasing a Wild Card spot when the Ottawa Senators take on the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Senators are coming off a 5-2 away defeat to Vancouver and will now be facing their fourth of a current five game road trip. Ottawa is sitting fifth in the Atlantic division with a record of 33 wins, 28 losses and four overtime defeats for a points total of 70. This also puts the Sens fifth in the Wild Card hunt as they trail the top two Islanders and Penguins by six points. While they are still within a shout of a playoff appearance, they’ll need to get hot as we enter the final stretch of the regular season. Ottawa hasn’t been able to maintain the same consistency that they have shown at home as they have on the road this season. The visitors are below .500 with a record of 14 wins, 16 defeats and two overtime losses on their travels so far.
The Calgary Flames also find themselves with an outside shot at the playoffs as they are in a very similar situation to their opponents today. The Flames are fifth in the Pacific division with 29 losses, 24 defeats and 13 overtime losses for a points total of 71. They sit fourth in the Wild Card race as they trail the second-place Winnipeg Jets by six points for the second and final postseason spot. Calgary will need to step up their form if they are to make a serious run at the playoffs as they are now looking at a stretch of only three wins in their last 10 games. Their last outing resulted in a 3-1 home loss to the Ducks, a result which snapped an encouraging two game winning streak. The hosts have been on an awful run at the Scotiabank Saddledome as the most recent loss means its now five consecutive defeats in front of the home fans.
