Third seed Holger Rune will play the unseeded Brandon Nakashima on Friday in the second round of the Shanghai Masters. Brandon Nakashima defeated fellow unseeded player Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the opening round. He won in straight sets to secure the perfect start to his debut here. His 12th win of the season also ended a run of four straight defeats. Nakashima has struggled in 2023 and has lost more matches than he has won. He has been defeated 21 times and the majority of his losses, 13, have come on hard courts. The 22-year-old has dropped 16 places in the live ranking to number 138. He defeated Rune two seasons ago at the Next Gen Finals in Milan in what is their only encounter to date.

Holger Rune has seen a dip in form in recent outings and arrives here having lost six of his last seven matches. The current world number five was defeated in straight sets in his last match which was in the second round in Beijing. But as he has fared way better than Nakashima this year, he will be confident of starting off with a win. Rune has compiled a 38-18 record with 10 of his victories coming in 19 outings on hard courts. He has won one title, in Munich, and has finished as runner-up twice. Rune is also making his debut in Shanghai. The winner will set up a third-round showdown with either Tomas Martin Etcheverry or Zhang Zhizhen.
