Botic van de Zandschulp started his tournament in the qualifying rounds. On his Tokyo debut, he won his first qualifier via decider against crowd favourite Yosuke Watanuki.
In his second fixture he was more decisive and overcame the challenge of Luca Nardi in straight sets. The win saw him tie his record at 27-27. Van de Zandschulp has struggled at tour level this season, failing to win more than two main draw matches at an ATP tournament.

Matteo Berrettini has won all three previous meetings with van de Zandschulp. Their last encounter was a week ago in the Davis Cup. The Italian won in three sets which was also his last competitive match before landing in Tokyo.
With this dominant record, he will be confident of making a winning start in Japan. Berrettini is having a superb year and looks to have finally gotten over his fitness concerns.
The 28-year-old has won 29 of the 37 matches he has played. This run, which has been boosted by his dominance on clay courts, has yielded three titles.
The former Wimbledon finalist secured tour titles in Marrakech, Kitzbuhel and Gstaad and was also a finalist in Stuttgart. The winner here will battle Taylor Fritz or Arthur Fils for a place in the quarter-finals.
