Botic van de Zandschulp is up against Denis Shapovalov with the winner going into the second round at Indian Wells. The victor has a tough match ahead of them in the last 64  of this outdoor hard court tournament with the scheduled opponent being 26th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Both of these players are unseeded and lost more matches than they have won in 2024. Van de Zandschulp is ranked 82nd and hasn't had the best of lucks with draws this year. He's had to play Jannik Sinner in both the Australian Open and in Rotterdam. The Dutch player is yet to get past the second round of a tournament in 2024. His latest tournament was in Dubai where he beat Adrian Mannarino but then lost to Sebastian Korda, winning just one game.

Denis Shapovalov is down at 131st in the world rankings. That's a long way below his career high of tenth position. He's having a miserable year with just one main draw win so far in 2024. This is a Masters 1000 tournament so lots of ranking points on offer and the Canadian could do with earning some. His only main draw win this year was in Montpellier when beating Hugo Gaston. He's beaten him twice this year with a victory in the Rotterdam qualifiers too but lost to the French player in Marseille.
