The Eastern Conference leading Boston Celtics host the historically bad 15th-place Detroit Pistons for this Thursday matchup in the NBA. Boston are fresh off of a Christmas Day 126-115 away victory over the LA Lakers, moving their record on the year to an NBA-best 23-6. The Celtics are on a three game winning streak and have now won eight of their last 10 overall. Boston now returns to the TD Garden with three days rest and looking to continue their unbeaten home streak. The hosts are a perfect 14-0 in front of the home fans and will almost surely be able to extend it to 15 against a Detroit team on a monumental losing streak. The Celtics are the clear front-runners for the NBA title, ranking significantly higher than their peers in many advanced statistical categories. Their adjusted net rating of +10.1 is 1.8 higher than second-place Philly and 4.6 higher than third-place OKC.

The Pistons have made history with their latest 118-112 loss to the Brooklyn Nets marking the team’s 27th defeat in a row. They now have the ignominy of holding the longest single-season losing streak in league history. A loss here would also see them tie the record for the longest all-time losing streak which the 76ers accumulated over the course of two seasons. It’s hard to imagine Detroit finally putting an end to the streak here considering the level of competition they are up against. The Pistons have a 2-28 record on the year, evenly split up as 1-14 both at home and on the road. Perhaps the one slight silver lining that coach Monty Williams can look towards is the fact that three of his team’s last four losses have been by single-digits.
