Boston Bruins vs New Jersey Devils Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL
by Matthew Newman | in NHL Predictions
The 18-13-2 New Jersey Devils are on the road to take on the 20-7-6 Boston Bruins. At home the Bruins are 13-2-3, proving a very hard team to turn over at TD Garden. They have not set the world alight in terms of scoring but have made up for it with the third tightest defence in the league. They won all three matchups with the Devils last season but suffered defeat when the teams met two and a half weeks back. Their biggest issue this campaign has been the lack of secondary scoring. Behind David Pastrnak with 45 points is Brad Marchand with 30 and Charlie Coyle with 23. This has made for a very lopsided team, especially with both Pastrnak and Marchand having 20 points each on the powerplay. Luckily for Boston, theirs is one of the most potent powerplays in the league but they can't rely on other teams taking penalties to provide them with scoring opportunities. They have the second most points in the Eastern Conference so they are doing plenty right but it lacks the same unstoppable juggernaut feel that they had last regular season.
The Devils will arrive in Boston fresh off taking on the Ottawa Senators the night before, looking for a third win in a row in that game in Canada. Things have not gone well for the Devils this season when they are in the second half of a back-to-back, losing six of their seven games when they play for a second day in a row which will be music to the ears of the Bruins. After setting a new franchise record for points last season, they have slipped backwards considerably this time around, especially defensively. A top 10 defence in goals against a year ago has fallen to 26th this season which has not helped. They were 22-9-2 after 33 games last season, only eight points better off but they felt like a much better team. Last season they ended as a +277 as a team, a -72 so far this season shows how far they have fallen as a five-on-five unit. Like the Bruins, they have enjoyed a lot of success on the powerplay but unlike the Bruins, their goalie tandem of Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid has been poor, with just an .888 save percentage between them.
