Borna Coric faces Sebastian Ofner for a place in the second round at Indian Wells. Both of these Europeans are unseeded and the victor will take on 25th seed Jan-Lennard Struff. Coric is ranked 35th and that's just three places above his opponent. The Croatian (who was as high as 12th five years ago) has reached one final this year. It was probably a tournament he didn't want to play in as it was in a Challenger Tour event in late January. He only played in that as he'd lost in the first round of the Australian Open. He then reached the final of the ATP Tour indoor tournament in Montpellier beating Holger Rune but losing in the title decider to Alexander Bublik. That was the first of three successive losses. most recently being beaten by Jakub Mensik in Dubai. Two of those three losses have been inflicted by Bublik.

Sebastian Ofner began this year well with a run to the semi-finals in Hong Kong. That included a win over Jan-Lennard Struff who he could meet in round two of this ATP 1000 Masters tournament. Ofner won three matches in that January tournament but hasn't been able to repeat that form since. Only two of his last eight matches has been won and one of those was against a player ranked outside the top 1000. His last event was in Acapulco where he beat Ernesto Escobedo (ranked 493rd) before losing to Alex de Minaur. We tip Coric to get a victory and move into round two.
