Fourth seeded Borna Coric takes on the eighth seed Ilya Ivashka in the last eight of the Los Cabos Open. The winner here will face either top seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas or sixth seed Nicolas Jarry in the semi-finals of this outdoor hard court tournament. Coric began this week ranked 16th in the world but hadn't won a match since May. That was when losing in the last 32 at Roland Garros. Since then, he played three grass court tournaments and didn't win a match. Now he's back on a surface he plays much better on. He reached two hard court quarter finals earlier this year and then a last four and a quarter final on clay. He's back in winning form this week and only lost three games when beating qualifier Jason Jung in his first match and that's taken him up to 15th in the live rankings.

Iyla Ivashka was ranked 113th when this Los Cabos Open began. The 29-year-old has been struggling this year with only seven of his 22 matches being won before this tournament. He was ranked 40th in June 2022 and 73rd at the start of this year. He dropped down the rankings in recent weeks after losing the points earned when reaching the last four in Atlanta last year. Ivashka didn't play that event this year and this is his first tournament since losing in the second round at Wimbledon. He had a disastrous start to the year, losing his first five matches and all of them were on this surface. This is the first time in 2023 he's made it past the last 32 of a hard court tournament. The only highlight of a poor year was getting to the last eight of a clay court event in Geneva. Perhaps the break since Wimbledon has done him some good. He's had two wins this week but in both he had to come from a set down to get through. Those wins have taken him back into the top 100 and he's 99th in the live rankings.
