Bianca Andreescu is making her season debut on hard courts. She will be happy to do so at a tournament she has excelled in. The Canadian won the title here in an incredible 2019 campaign that also saw her triumph at Indian Wells and the US Open.

Injuries have hampered the former world number four’s career and she hasn’t been able to replicate the highs from five years ago. Andreescu had a belated start to her 2024 season. She has played 14 matches and won nine times. Currently placed 165th in the live ranking, Andreescu is coming off a second-round exit at the Paris Olympics.

Lesia Tsurenko has never lost against Andreescu. She won all their three encounters, with one being on a hard court. That was in the semi-finals in Hua Hin last year. As she has struggled with her form all year, this dominant record will give her confidence that she can have a winning start in Toronto.

Tsurenko is making her Canadian Open debut. She arrives here having lost her last four matches. The Ukrainian was defeated in the first round in Washington in her most recent match. Tsurenko, a four-time tour champion on hard courts, is having a disappointing season by her standards.

She has lost 13 times in 22 outings and compiled a 7-7 record on hard courts. Her struggles have seen her drop down to 82nd place in the live ranking.
