Bianca Andreescu is only 18 years-old and ranked 60th in the world. A wild card was needed for her to get into this main draw and nearly departed in the first round when having to come from behind to beat Irina Camelia-Begu. Her form has improved since with wins over 32nd seed Dominika Cibulkova and 18th seed Wang Qiang.The quarter-final saw her defeat 20th seed Garbine Muguruza dropping just one game. Andreescu has already had success in the lower-tier 125K series winning a tournament in Newport Beach and she looks a star of the future.

Elina Svitolina is the sixth seed and the highest one left in this tournament. She had a tough second-round and fell a set down to Sonya Kenin. Another set was dropped when facing 12th seed Ashleigh Barty and also in her last-eight match against Marketa Vondrousova. The number six seed has had a consistent year though with two semi-finals and a quarter-final and she can end Andreescu's run in this tournament.
