Two unseeded players meet in the first round of the clay court Cordoba Open. Christian Garin takes on Bernabe Zapate Miralles with the winner facing third seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry in round two. Garin is the world number 87 and comes into this tournament still looking for his first win of 2024. He lost a five-setter to Christopher O'Connell in the Australian Open after leading 2-1. His first clay court tournament of the year was a Challenger Tour event held in Uruguay where he lost in the first round to Marco Cecchinato who was ranked outside the top 200 at the time. Garin is 1-1 in previous matches against Miralles but he lost their only match played on clay. Garin reached the Wimbleon quarter finals last year and won this clay court tournament three years ago.

Bernabe Zapata Miralles has also made a disappointing start to 2024 with four of his five matches being lost. The Spaniard is ranked 79th and his only win this year came in the qualifying rounds of the Adelaide International. He won that one game, lost in the final qualifying round and was then reinstated as a lucky loser but lost to Matteo Arnaldi in round one of the main draw. Losses in the Ausralian Open and last week's Open de Sud France followed. His career high is 37th attained last year but he then lost the points earned when getting to the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2022. He did get to two semi-finals on the South American clay court tour last year  This could be a close match but we tip Miralles to get the win.
