Second seed Jannik Sinner and the unseeded Ben Shelton will meet on Wednesday at the Vienna Open first round. Ben Shelton is coming off his title triumph in Tokyo. The young American defeated Aslan Karatsev in the final of the Japan Open to secure his first tour-level title. Shelton has been in fine form recently and has won nine of his last 10 matches. In this rich spell, he defeated Sinner in Shanghai in their first-ever meeting. He will hope to double his advantage and extend his current five-match winning streak. Shelton, who is ranked 15th in the ATP, is an excellent performer on indoor hard courts. He has compiled a 31-4 record on the surface in his career and has won his only match on the surface this season.

Jannik Sinner is also a strong performer on indoor hard courts. This season so far, he has won seven of eight matches on the surface. He will therefore be confident of getting his revenge against Shelton. Sinner hasn’t played since losing to Shelton two weeks ago. That defeat ended a six-match winning run for the Italian that had seen him triumph in Beijing. Sinner is having his best-ever campaign at tour level. He has contested five finals and won three titles which in turn has moved him up to fourth in the ATP. The 22-year-old is already assured of a spot in the end-year ATP Finals. The winner here will next face lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego.
