Shelton defeated Fils in their very first encounter last year at the Laver Cup. As they are duelling on an indoor surface once again, he will be confident of claiming another win.
Shelton is coming off a three-set battle against top seed Andrey Rublev. It was a rare victory against a top-10 player this year and he will be buoyed by this. Shelton, who has moved up to 20th in the live ranking, is seeking to add to his title in Houston.
Arthur Fils tied this series a month ago, winning a grueling three-set battle on his way to lifting the Japan Open. The match lasted close to three hours and saw each player win their set(s) in seven games.
He will hope another win sets up a similar trajectory and leads him to his second tour title of the year. Fils is having a superb season and has now advanced to his fourth semi.
