Belgium - Australia: Form Analysis
Belgium had a poor start in Paris but grew as the tournament progressed. They began with back-to-back defeats and needed to win their final group match to squeeze through as a third-best-placed finisher.
Rachid Meziane’s players have won two of their five matches in Paris – against Japan and Spain. In both matches, they won convincingly, their 13-point victory over Spain being their lowest win margin. Against hosts France in the semis, Belgium were in strong offensive form once again and led through the first three quarters.
In the fourth, however, they allowed France to force OT where they were outscored 15-9. Belgium, who defeated Australia in the group stages in Tokyo in 2020, are putting up 76.4 points per game. This tally is bettered by just two other teams. They have been in fine form since November 2022 and have won 22 of their last 28 games. In this stretch, they claimed gold at last year’s EuroBasket.
Belgium's second Olympics appearance didn't have the dream start but they recovered well.
Australia defeated Belgium the last time the two nations met – in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup where they secured bronze.
As they have a better history at the Olympics, the Opals will be confident of a win. Five times in their last seven Olympics appearances, Australia finished in the top three places and claimed silver three times.
Their last medal came at the London Games in 2012 where they secured bronze. Sandy Brondello’s players also began their Paris campaign with defeat as they fell to Nigeria on matchday one. This would be a wake-up call, leading them to win their next three matches, defeating Canada, France and Serbia.
They put up at least 70 points in each of those three wins. In the semis against the US, however, they struggled to get going offensively and lost 85-64. Australia, who have lost six times in their last 11 games, are averaging 72 points in Paris.

Kyara Linskens and Julie Vanloo are the other players managing at least 11 points for the Opals. Meesseman is also leading the tournament on blocks per game with 2.6.
Emma Meesseman has been mercurial for Belgium in offence at Paris 2024.
Sami Whitcomb and Alanna Smith are the only players registering at least 10 points per game for Australia. Whitcomb, who is averaging 31.3 minutes on the court, is leading the team with 12.8 points. Smith is putting up 11.2 points in 22 minutes. Both Smith and Whitcomb are shooting about 57% from the field.

Our Belgium vs Australia Prediction
Belgium have been in fine form over the last two years but haven’t dominated as they would have wanted at the Olympics. Still, they have been one of the best offensive teams in Paris. Belgium sit in the top three in points per game, field goal percentage as well as in blocks.
Coming up against an Australian team that has had issues with turnovers favors Belgium. Australia have also lacked consistency in 2024, though they are the more prestigious team in this fixture. Our prediction for Belgium v Australia is for Belgium to win.
