Belgium vs Australia Prediction & Betting Tips - Women's World Cup
by Joseph King | in Women's World Cup Predictions
The quarter-final of the FIBA Womens World Cup closes out with the 2018 silver medalists Australia taking on 2018 fourth-place finishers Belgium in Sydney. One of the favorites for the gold medal and the hosts of the tournament, Australia will be expected to make it to another Finals matchup where they will most likely come face-to-face with the American’s for a second consecutive tournament. Australia, the only team other than the United States to win gold in the past 24 years, hold the #3 spot in FIBA’s world rankings while Belgium comes in right behind at #5. The oddsmakers have Australia as significant favorites here, but can the Opals follow through against a Belgian team that they have struggled with in the past?

Belgium - Australia: Form Analysis
Australia bounced back after an opening game hiccup against France to win their remaining four games and finish top of the “group of death”. Belgium had a decent group stage, beating the teams they were supposed to beat but ultimately coming up short against the USA and China where they would suffer double digit defeats. The only other time these two nations faced off was in the 2021 Olympics, where Belgium upset the odds to win outright as +8.5 underdogs. Australia has historically fared very well in this tournament and at this stage in particular, winning five of their last six quarter-final appearances at the FIBA World Cup.

Belgium & Australia Squad Analysis
As previously discussed, Belgium will be without two-time All-Star and 2019 WNBA Finals MVP Emma Meesseman due to a calf injury and her presence will be sorely missed by the Cats. They’ll need to be faultless and shoot above average from the floor if they are to cause the upset against a full strength Australia team that looks to be hitting their full stride. There is excellent scoring balance in the Aussie squad with four players averaging in double figures. It’s hard to identify a clear star on this Australia team, which is a great indicator of their overall team depth.
Belgium - Australia Key Points
- Australia were the highest scoring team in Group A with 390 total points scored (third highest overall) as well as having the highest Group A points differential at +82.
- Australia were 3-1-1 against the spread in the group stage with three of their four wins coming by double digits.
- A calf injury has sidelined Belgium’s key player Emma Meesseman who will miss the rest of the tournament. Belgium suffered a 81-55 loss to China in the most recent match without her.
- Australia has won 17 of their last 19 FIBA World Cup games against European teams.

Our Belgium vs Australia Prediction
We’re going to back Australia to get the win and cover the -13.5 point spread in the process. This number may appear excessively large at first glance but the Australians do have a number of factors working in their favor. First of all, the Opals have been shooting the lights out from deep, averaging 40% this tournament from beyond the arc. In addition to a key injury on the Belgian team as well as the advantage that Australia will have playing in front of the home fans, scoring another upset victory looks to be too much to ask for the Cats.
