Seventh seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia takes on unseeded Marta Kostyuk in the San Diego Open. This is the second round of this outdoor hard court tournament with the winner going into the last eight. Waiting in the quarter finals for the winner will be either fourth seed Barbora Krejcikova or unseeded Anhelina Kalinina. Mai is ranked 20th in the latest list but was as high as 10th in June of this year. Since her run to the last four at Roland Garros, the last 16 was reached at Wimbledon. Recent hard court form is not good though with only two of her five matches being won. The US Open saw her beat Sloane Stephens in the first round but the Brazilian was then beaten by Taylor Townsend in her next match. Form on this surface was better earlier in the year with a couple of quarter finals and a semi-final. The first round of this tournament saw her have to go to three sets to get past Leylah Fernandez.

Mata Kostyuk has won one hard court tournament this year. That was in the US when winning the ATX Open in March, though no top 30 ranked players were beaten by her in that tournament. Kostyuk is 45th in the latest ranking list but up to 42nd after her win over Magda Linette in round one of this tournament. That's 10 places below the career high ranking she achieved last month. The 21-year-old had lost her last four matches before beating Linette. In the US Open she lost in the first round, only taking three games off Elena Rybakina. Our tip here is for Mai to get the win.
