The winner of this first-round tie will play either Magda Linette or Marta Kostyuk next. Beatriz Haddad Maia arrives in San Diego after her second-round elimination at the US Open. The Brazilian has struggled with her form in recent weeks and arrives here having lost three times in her last four outings. One of those defeats came against Fernandez in Montreal in what was their third career meeting. All three matches between the two have been played on hard court with Maia claiming her first win last season in Toronto. Maia has compiled a 28-18 record in 2023 and a 13-10 record on hard court. A former world number 10, Maia is currently down one place to 20th in the live ranking.

Leylah Fernandez has won twice against Maia with the latest victory coming last month. This should have her confident of coming out on top again despite her struggles. Fernandez has won just six more matches than the 20 she has lost in 2023. Two of those defeats have come in her last two outings. The Canadian was eliminated from the US Open in the first round in her last match. This was a disappointing showing for the former Flushing Meadows finalist. Fernandez is making her second appearance in San Diego. She will hope to go past this round unlike in her debut last year. The 21-year-old has recorded the majority of her victories, 17, on hard court. She is currently down seven places to 74th in the live ranking.
